Chichu Art Museum tickets: how release days, slots and sold-out dates work

Every visit is timed, every month goes on sale on one morning in Japan, and a sold-out day stays sold out at the door.

Updated October 2026 · Chichu Art Museum Concierge Team

The Chichu Art Museum on Naoshima admits visitors only by reservation, in 15-minute entry slots that each hold a fixed number of people. Tickets for each month go on sale on a single morning, Japan time, about two months ahead, and on busy days the slots are gone long before the ferry docks. If a day sells out online, the museum sells nothing at the door. This guide explains how the release rhythm works, what a ticket covers, how children are counted, what happens to a sold-out date, and how we book your visit or hold a date for you until it can be booked. Read it before you fix the rest of your Setouchi plans, because the museum slot is the part of the day you cannot improvise.

Why every visit is timed

Chichu is a small museum built into a hill, and its rooms are made to be seen in quiet. The Monet room, the Turrell works and De Maria's Time/Timeless/No Time are all lit from above by daylight, and they are best seen without a crowd. So the museum controls the flow: you reserve a date and an entry time, and each 15-minute slot admits a fixed number of people.

This is not a formality. The museum's own ticket page calls it limited capacity per slot, and in October 2025 the operator warned that many time slots were already sold out. A timed slot is therefore the one fixed point in a Naoshima day. The ferry, the bus and lunch all arrange themselves around it.

Your ticket is valid for the time you reserved on your date. Choose a slot that leaves room for the crossing and the island bus, and plan to reach the Ticket Center a little before it.

The monthly release rule

Tickets for each month go on sale at 10:00 Japan time on the second Friday of the month two months before. The rule is simple once you see it on a calendar. December 2026 went on sale on Friday 9 October 2026. January 2027 goes on sale on Friday 13 November 2026. March 2027 goes on sale on Friday 8 January 2027, April on Friday 12 February 2027 and May on Friday 12 March 2027.

For most international visitors that release morning falls in the middle of the night or late the evening before. 10:00 in Japan is 01:00 in London in winter, 02:00 in Paris and 20:00 the previous day in New York. Popular days can go quickly once they are released.

If your date is further out than the current sales window, it is not sold out. It simply has not been released yet. That distinction matters, because a date that is not on sale can still be secured on release morning, while a sold-out date depends on places coming back.

What one ticket covers

A regular entry ticket covers every room of the museum on your date: the five late Water Lilies by Claude Monet, James Turrell's Afrum, Pale Blue, Open Field and Open Sky, and Walter De Maria's Time/Timeless/No Time. It also lets you into the Chichu Café and the Chichu Store, which sit inside the museum and are open only to ticket holders.

Once you are inside there is no further booking. You move through the rooms at your own pace. Plan on at least an hour, more if you want to sit in the café over the Inland Sea.

With us, the adult timed entry is for visitors aged 16 and over. It is booked on the museum's official system, and your e-ticket is sent to you by email. The fare you see is the total you pay, in your own currency.

Children and the free reservation

Children aged 15 and under enter the museum free by day. They still need a reservation, because the museum counts every person in the slot. It is a small detail that catches families out: arrive with a child who is not on the booking and the slot may already be full.

We add children to your booking at no charge. Tell us their ages at checkout and we reserve their free places in the same slot as you. There is no paid children's ticket for the daytime museum on our site, because the museum does not charge for them.

Pushchairs are left at the Ticket Center or at reception, and the museum lends baby slings. Some rooms ask you to take off your shoes, so shoes that slip on and off help with small children.

Groups and the eight-person limit

The museum allows up to eight tickets for the same 15-minute slot. A party of nine or more is split into groups of eight or fewer, entering at different times. The museum asks for this to keep the rooms calm, and it applies to friends and families as much as to tour groups.

When you book a larger party with us, we arrange the split for you, placing the groups in nearby slots so you can meet again in the café or garden. Tell us how you would like the party divided, for example by family, and we keep that in mind.

Sold-out days and why the door is no help

When a day sells out online, the museum sells no tickets on site that day. It also keeps no waiting list of its own. The operator says that places from cancellations reappear automatically on the online reservation page, which means someone has to be checking at the right moment.

That is the gap our waitlist fills. If your date is sold out, hold it with us at no charge. We watch the museum's booking system for places that come back on your date, and when we can book, we email you a secure payment link. Once you pay, we reserve the visit and send your e-ticket.

We do not promise that a place will appear. Some days stay full. If nothing opens on your date, we tell you and suggest the nearest days that are still open, and you are never charged for a visit we cannot book.

Holding a date that is not on sale yet

If you are planning months ahead, your date may simply not be released. In that case you can hold it with us in the same way. We are there at 10:00 Japan time on release morning and book your slot as soon as the month opens, then send you the payment link.

This suits travellers who have fixed flights, rail passes or hotels and want the museum to fit the plan rather than the other way round. Give us a preferred entry time and a range you could accept, and we book the closest match.

Remember the closures when you plan. The museum is closed on Mondays, except when a Monday is a national holiday, in which case it opens and closes on the Tuesday. It is also closed for maintenance from 12 January to 19 March 2027, so no dates in that window will be released.

Changes, closures and refunds

The museum does not change the date or time of a reserved ticket. Please check your ferry, your rail connection and your other plans before you book, because a slot booked for the wrong day cannot be moved.

Art facilities on Naoshima can close in typhoons and other severe weather. If the museum closes on a date we have booked for you, you get your money back in full. Ferry and hotel bookings are separate, so check those terms too.

If you are unsure which time to choose, write to us before you book. We can suggest a slot that fits the sailings from Uno or Takamatsu on your day.

A worked example: planning around release day

Say you are planning a trip for late April 2027. April goes on sale at 10:00 Japan time on Friday 12 February 2027. Until then, the April dates will not appear on the museum's calendar at all, which can look as if everything is sold out when nothing has been released yet.

If your flights and hotels are already fixed, hold your date and preferred entry time with us any time before 12 February. On release morning we book the slot, then email you the payment link. If your first-choice time has gone, we book the nearest time within the range you gave us.

Now say you are travelling in a fortnight. Your date is already on sale, and you can book directly on our fares. If it shows as sold out, hold it with us and we check for places that come back.

Choosing your time of day

Because the rooms are lit by daylight, a 10:15 slot and a 15:30 slot are two different visits. There is no best time; there is the time that suits your ferry, your energy and the light you would like to see.

Practically, a late-morning or early-afternoon slot is the easiest to reach from the mainland on the day. The last admission is at 16:00, and the café inside closes at 16:45, so a very late slot leaves little time to linger.

On a Friday or Saturday you can also combine a day slot with the Night Program. The adult Night Program ticket already includes museum entry that day, so you do not need both.

On the day itself

Keep your e-ticket on your phone with enough battery, or print it. Go to the Chichu Art Museum Ticket Center, where the shuttle stops, a little before your slot. Leave suitcases, umbrellas and tripods in a coin locker or at the Ticket Center.

Inside, phones are put away and photography stops at reception. Some rooms ask you to take your shoes off. Move at your own pace, and come back to a room if the light has changed since you first saw it.

How booking with us works

Choose your date and entry time on our checkout and pay in your own currency. We reserve your visit on the museum's official reservation system and email you the e-ticket. For children aged 15 and under, add their ages in the notes and we include their free places.

If the date you want is sold out or not yet released, the checkout offers to hold it instead. No payment is taken and no card details are stored. We only ask you to pay once we can actually book.

We are an independent booking service, not the museum. Our price includes the museum ticket and our service: watching release mornings, checking for returned places, handling children's reservations and answering your questions in English before you travel.
